Ordinations
Please pray for Pauline Jones as she is ordained deacon at the cathedral this morning. Eighteen new curates will be ordained deacon today. The Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Revd Nigel McCulloch, said: “Manchester is a city with a strong tradition of ordaining committed men and women who will serve in our diverse communities. Ordination recognises and celebrates the exciting way God is at work in his church, calling men and women to serve him in new and surprising ways.”

A good likeness
An infant teacher was observing her classroom of children while they drew. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's artwork. As she came to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, "I'm drawing God."
The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like." Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing the girl replied,. . . . "They will in a minute."

Marys in the Gospels
If Alan's sermon got you thinking last week and you want to find out more.... Manchester Cathedral is hosting a lecture, on Tuesday this week - 22nd June 10.15am - 1.45pm. For more information look on the church of England website or see the flyer at the back of church.
You are invited to a fascinating lecture sponsored by the Israel Ministry of Tourism. Dr James Fleming: New Discoveries about the Marys in the Gospels
The lecture will feature: Mary, the Mother of Jesus (and a Dead Sea Scroll fragment) The Cana Wedding Feast Mary of Bethany on the Mount of Olives (and the archaeology of the Bethany) The Feast at Simon the Leper’s House Mary Magdalene (and the current excavations at Magdala) The Feast at Simon the Pharisee’s House
It will address the following points: From where did the tradition come that Mary Magdalene had been a prostitute? Why is Jesus’ Mother not mentioned by name in John’s Gospel? What evidence do we have for where Jesus’ mother’s last days were spent? Who was the woman who washed Jesus feet with her tears in Luke 7? Why were tears sometimes kept in bottles? What might Leonardo Da Vinci say about The Da Vinci Code? What do we really know about Mary Magdalene?

World Cup Prayers You may have noticed that a certain sporting event started last Friday. Right Rev Nick Baines, the Bishop of Croydon, has written a trinity of prayers for the occasion! A prayer for all those involved: Lord of all the nations, who played the cosmos into being, guide, guard and protect all who work or play in the World Cup. May all find in this competition a source of celebration, an experience of common humanity and a growing attitude of generous sportsmanship to others. Amen A prayer for the host nations: God of the nations, who has always called his people to be a blessing for the world, bless all who take part in the World Cup. Smile on South Africa in her hosting, on the nations represented in competition and on those who travel to join in the party. Amen A prayer for those just not interested: Lord, as all around are gripped with World Cup fever, bless us with understanding, strengthen us with patience and grant us the gift of sympathy if needed. Amen

What to plant?
The visiting gardener listened very warily as Mrs, Gray, our club’s most struggling gardener, described the difficulties she was experiencing with her garden. “What would you recommend that I plant,” she asked, “in that area which is half clay and half rock, with extremely high acidity, subject to far too much midday sun and receiving hardly any rainfall?”
The expert scratched his head and finally ventured: “A flagpole.”
Black Death An elderly parish priest was tending his garden near a convent when a passerby stopped to inquire after the priest's much-loved roses. "Not bad," said the priest, "but they suffer from a disease peculiar to this area known as the black death."
"What on earth is that?" asked the passerby, anxious to increase his garden knowledge.
"Nuns with scissors."

Are you a crack-pot?
A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole, which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water to the house. The cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to his house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishment, perfect for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. After two years of spilling water, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you. I have been able to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.”
The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you've watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house." In life, we're all cracked pots. But our weaknesses need not destroy our lives. God only ever has imperfect people to use. Despite our flaws, God can still bless us and make us fruitful for him. |

Spring Daffodils and the renovated benches
We recently had the church repainted, both inside and out along with the two benches in the garden, through the Community Payback Scheme. The painting of the window frames, especially, now really set off the coloured glass to catch the eye of passersby.
Many thanks to the Team and those who look after them. Last but not least, our thanks go to Mr Graham Eckersall J.P. who made it all happen.

Walking the Cross This year we welcomed members of All Saints and Martyrs, Langley who joined the congregations of St Mary, Birch and St Thomas, Bowlee for the annual walk of witness from Birch to Bowlee. There was a very good turnout this year, especially as the weather was not terribly inviting. Following a short service at St Mary’s, we took it in turns to carry the cross to where it was erected in the garden at St Thomas’ where we all sang a hymn around the cross. Wood Street Mission
Wood Street Mission have started their Easter appeal. In the current economic climate they are being asked to help more people than ever before. They are trying to provide hampers and Easter Eggs for families. The food parcels will be like the Christmas hampers they distribute and will contain a variety of non perishable items, including tins of meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, soups, cereals, packets of pasta or rice, biscuits, tea or coffee and luxury items (sauces, condiments etc). The basket is now at the back of church for donations. We are asked to keep Easter Eggs separate so they do not get crushed. Maybe during Lent everyone could buy one extra thing in their shopping each week as a donation?
If you are a member of Facebook, you can also add Wood Street Mission as a friend. They now have 159 friends and have set a target of 1000 friends.
See Janet for more details or have a look at their latest newsletter at the back of church.

10th February Scholastica (d. c. 543)
Scholastica should be the patron saint of any woman who can bend her brother to do her will - no matter how ‘powerful’ that brother might seem to other people.
For Scholastica’s brother was no less than the great monk Benedict, who founded the famous Benedictine order and lived at Monte Cassino. In no way over-awed, Scholastica simply became the first ever Benedictine nun, with a nunnery five miles down the road – at Plombariola.
Now Scholastica greatly enjoyed her annual meetings with her brother at a house nearby, but the time passed too quickly. One year she begged him to stay longer, to discuss “the joys of heaven”, but he refused. So Scholastica took swift action: she prayed up such a mighty thunderstorm that her brother was forced to spend the rest of the night talking to her. Or maybe – she talked and he listened? No one knows for sure.
In any case, Scholastica died happy three days later, and was buried in the tomb Benedict had prepared for himself. She became the patron of Benedictine nunneries.

Curiosity A teacher was finishing a lesson on the joys of discovery and the importance of curiosity.
"After all,” she declared, “Where would we be today," she asked, "if no one had ever been curious?"
One child quietly spoke up from the back of the room “In the garden of Eden?"

Run the Race Many thanks to all who helped prepare for the Run the Race event last Thursday – cooking, cleaning, preparing flowers, music etc. It was a great event, very uplifting and inspiring and feedback from people within the community has been very positive.
Bishop Nigel encouraged us all to pass on the gospel baton of faith, hope and love and made a great impression on all he met and spoke to.
The new communion table was also dedicated in memory of Mrs Flo Fitton. The young people particularly enjoyed holding the Commonwealth baton!

Wesley Owen Wesley Owen will probably be open for another couple of weeks as they take on more stock from other shops already closed. The closing down sale still continues so if you are thinking of buying Christian books, cards, gifts or want to be prepared early for next Christmas you have an extra opportunity.
Please continue to pray for all the staff as they look for new work as they still face great uncertainty about the future. Some of the shops have been bought by a couple of other Christian organisations but as yet the Manchester branch has not.
